Decode (当下乱码)
My Role - Content Director · Editor · Motion Designer. I launched the series, owned the editorial direction across all episodes, and oversee shooting, editing, and motion graphic production end-to-end.
The Brief - Dangxia Media is a Chinese science and culture channel with over 2 million followers across Bilibili, Weibo, and WeChat. As Senior Program Director, I was responsible for identifying stories, developing editorial frameworks, and leading production end-to-end across the channel's output.
Decode was a sub-series I launched within the channel, focused on the intersection of Gen-Z culture and emerging technology — covering topics from Bitcoin and algorithmic bias to accessibility tech and AI applications in mental health crisis intervention.
The Approach - The core editorial challenge was consistent across every episode: how do you make genuinely complex technical subjects compelling for a general audience without losing the people who already know the field?
The answer was structural. Each episode was built around a human story first — a person, a community, a contradiction — and used that narrative spine to introduce the technical layer. Motion graphics were designed in-house in After Effects to visualize systems and data that couldn't be filmed, keeping the visual language consistent and the pacing tight across the series.
My Role - I handled story development, shoot direction, editing, and motion graphic production on the series.
The Result - Decode episodes averaged 500,000 views per episode — consistently outperforming the channel's broader average. Over four years I directed and delivered 30+ mini-documentaries for Dangxia Media. The editorial and motion design framework I developed continued to be used by the team after my departure.
